Reflections on Starting Over, Letting Go, Dreaming Again & Becoming Who You’re Meant to Be

THIS ISN’T A BOOK ABOUT HAVING LIFE FIGURED OUT.

Tall heirloom story quilt depicting chapters from Rita’s life

I started writing this book at 53, at a time in my life when I was asking more questions than I was answering.

What do I want now?

What am I ready to let go of?

What have I learned from the woman I used to be?

What dreams have I put away because life got busy?

And what might still be possible?

So I started writing.

I wrote about being a girl. Becoming a mother. Building businesses. Losing things. Making money and losing money. Divorce. Starting over. Getting older. Fear. Work. Family. Friendship. Travel. Baklava. Tango. Quilts. And some of the ridiculous things I've done along the way.

Some of these stories make me laugh.

Some still hurt.

Some didn't make sense to me until years later.

Together, they became 53 reflections from 53 years of living.

This isn't a roadmap for reinventing your life.

It isn't a formula for becoming your best self.

And I certainly don't have five steps that will fix everything.

It's one woman's collection of stories about what life has taught her so far, and what might be worth carrying into whatever comes next.

Because whatever has already been written, there is still room on the page.

WHO I WROTE THIS FOR

I wrote this book for the woman who looks at her life and realizes she isn't finished.

Maybe something changed that she didn't choose.

Maybe nothing dramatic happened at all.

Maybe the life she built simply doesn't fit quite the way it used to.

Maybe she's spent so many years being somebody's mother, partner, employee, boss, caregiver or problem-solver that she's started wondering what she wants now.

Or maybe she's perfectly happy with much of her life and still feels something tugging at her.

What else?

I know that feeling.

It's one of the reasons I wrote this book.

Not because I have an answer for what your life should look like next.

But because sometimes another woman's story helps us see our own a little differently.

If these stories help you remember something you've forgotten, reconsider something you've accepted, laugh at something you've survived, or ask yourself a question you haven't asked in years, then this book has done what I hoped it would do.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rita Magalde, author

Rita Magalde is an entrepreneur, author and storyteller who has spent nearly three decades learning what it means to build, lose, begin again and keep going.

She is the founder of Sheer Ambrosia Bakery, the creator of Reinventing Rita TV and the author of From Mrs. to Ms.: How to Pull Your Life Together When Your Marriage Falls Apart.

Her writing is rooted in the ordinary places where life gets interesting: work, motherhood, money, family, mistakes, ambition, loss, humor, starting over and the choices we make when the life we've built begins asking something different of us.

At 53, Rita isn't writing from a finish line. She's writing from experience, with enough life behind her to have learned a few things and enough curiosity about what lies ahead to keep asking good questions.
